Supporting feed ingredient quality for grower-finisher pigs

Supporting feed ingredient quality for grower-finisher pigs

Today's global and highly complex food supply chain involves many potential quality and food safety risks. Swine feed producers play a crucial role in securing trust throughout the chain, from feed ingredients to the supermarket aisle.

A successful nutritional strategy starts with the quality of the feed ingredients. NutriOpt, Trouw Nutrition’s digital platform, including our Swine Model (Watson), supports sustainable precision farming for optimal animal performance and economic results. Our Selko Feed Safety programme for feed producers and farmers addresses challenges centered on mould, moisture and enterobacteria management, and yeast and mycotoxin control.

How to recognise

Feed can account for more than 70% of a pig producer’s cost, so every feed related decision can have a significant impact on profit margins.

The nutritional value of feed ingredients can be highly variable and fluctuate from batch to batch. When not properly managed, these fluctuations are likely to impact sow performance and profitability.

Based on extensive research, Trouw Nutrition has developed Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) calibration lines and nutritional databases to analyse and calculate the nutritional value of feed ingredients accurately, quickly and economically. Our NIR solutions optimise grower-finisher diets to deliver superior performance. These include:

  • Rapid detection of anti-nutritional factors (ANF), that reduce the availability of one or more nutrients and can adversely affect animal health and performance.
  • Controlling risks to feed safety. Minimising the numerous physical, chemical and especially microbiological threats including bacteria, mould, yeast and mycotoxin, requires an integrated approach, involving each part of the feed supply chain. Trouw Nutrition analyses more than 20,000 samples annually from crops around the globe for the presence of mycotoxin.

The impact on the farmer

Do you know what you feed? The NutriOpt Swine Model (Watson) allows you to correctly estimate the nutritional value of ingredients, allowing for precision feeding. Preventing unbalanced feed formulation is critical, as it can potentially cause losses in animal efficiency, performance, health and negatively impact your profitability.

Feed Safety programme

The safety and quality of raw materials and final feed is the basis of every feed producer’s value proposition. Microorganisms can negatively influence feed quality. Applying additives to the feed helps preserve its ingredients and subsequently the final feed and may even prolong product shelf life.
